Mortonhall Golf Club - the best hidden gem in Edinburgh. Mortonhall Golf Club was founded in 1892. The course is the oldest on which golf is still played in the city of Edinburgh and is regarded as one of Scotland's premier golf clubs. The original 9 holes has been extended and developed over the years by Willie Park, JH Taylor and James Braid. In 1977/79 six new holes were added and the entire course was upgraded by Fred Hawtree. As a consequence, the course is one of the few in Edinburgh which is entirely architecturally designed.
This championship course is a challenging test of golf and of sufficient quality to have hosted the Scottish National Strokeplay Championships and the Scottish Youths, yet it is consistently playable to golfers of all standards. The course has a wide range of natural features including fine textured rough grassland, mature woodland, rocky outcrops, young plantations and greens the envy of most of the clubs in the area; all contributing greatly to the enjoyment of playing the game of golf.
The course is one of outstanding scenic beauty, emerging from a narrow valley (the Khyber Pass) to an open area bounded by a wood on the south, and Braid Hills in the north. The course is exposed at the eastern end to a sweeping vista of Fife, the Firth or Forth and East Lothian. At 6530 yards the course is the longest in the city.
Particular concern has always been shown for the ecology of the environment in that the woodlands, pond and areas of rough ground have been allowed to revert to as natural a state as possible. The vision of our golf course is that is should extend beyond the tees, greens fairways and rough to the natural backcloth of the arena in which these elements are set. A sensitive and sympathetic concern for the environment is important as it enhances the character and ambience of the course and creates a habitat in which trees, flowers, plants and wildlife may safely flourish - hence increases the pleasure of playing golf. The green staff has endeavoured to create woodland path and grasslands, to manage the undergrowth in the wooded areas and to encourage flowers, plants and wildlife for the enjoyment of all. Their task is an ongoing one.
