Traces of human activity can be found to go back as far as 8000 years in Dunollie. Strategically located with views accross the bay stretching far into the isles it has been key in controlling Argyll. Whilst there is arechaological evidence for previous structures from the time of the Kingdom of Dal Riada, the current castle was built as a stronghold for the ancient and powerful Clan MacDougall in the 12th and 15th centuries. It is one of the rare sites in Scotland which remains until this day in the hands of the same family, as the Clan seat and ancestral home the MacDougalls.
The Museum, Castle and Grounds provide an exciting journey of discovery, where visitors of all ages can learn about the history of the castle, the noble MacDougall family and life on the west coast of Scotland through exciting exhibitions and displays. Dunollie Museum, Castle and Grounds is a pleasant 20 minutes walk or 7 minute cycle from the centre of Oban. Walk North along the coastline and enjoy beautiful sea views on your way, take the old carriageway woodland path which branches off at Corran Halls and at the War Memorial. By car, it is just 2 minutes away from Oban on the coastal road to Ganavan. We have parking facilities which you may use onsite.
Tickets can be purchased online or upon arrival. Dogs are welcome on a lead to all of Dunollie's outdoors spaces, inlcuding the Castle Ruin.
