The last ancestral home of the Macdonalds of Sleat, this magnificent highland estate in south Skye is now operated by the Clan Donald Lands Trust. Visitors can explore 40 acres of historic gardens and woodland walks around the romantic ruins of Armadale Castle, and enjoy stunning views across the Sound of Sleat to the mountains of Knoydart.
The mild climate created by the Gulf Stream sea-current and the sheltered aspect make the gardens a floral paradise. The estate is also home to the award-winning Museum of the Isles where you can discover the history of the Highlands and Islands through the epic story of Clan Donald, Scotland’s largest and most powerful clan. There’s also a welcoming café in the converted Stables building, a lovely gift shop, and regular events and activities.
The gardens and woodland is part of a wider 20,000-acre estate which offers fabulous walks for all levels of fitness, with views eastwards to Knoydart, or on the west of the peninsula across to the Cuillin mountain range. The estate is home to iconic wildlife species including red deer, golden eagles and sea eagles.
The Clan Donald Lands Trust, a registered charity, was established in 1971 to promote an understanding of the history and traditions of Clan Donald and the Lordship of the Isles. As custodians of this wonderful estate, the Trust has worked tirelessly to save and develop this important resource for the benefit of visitors to Skye and the local community.
