Kilmartin Castle

Kilmartin Castle has been cleverley restored by owners Stef & Simo who have a passion for Scotland, old buildings, antiques, artworks and organic growing. On a road trip around Scotland in 2014, as holidaymakers themselves, they were disappointed that they couldn't find a castle stay that 'felt like a castle' once inside. When they saw an article for Kilmartin Castle in 2015 they decided to leave their jobs to create the experience for travellers that they had been looking for. There is no mistaking where you are, stepping inside Kilmartin Castle, with it's exposed stone walls, medieval staircases, large fireplaces, barrel vaulted ceilings and arrow slit windows proudly untouched. This 16th Century castle does hold a few secrets though, like underfloor heating beneath the original flagstones and copper tubs in the bedrooms. You will not find another Scottish castle that captures the blend of rustic luxury like this one!
Kilmartin Castle sits at the top of Kilmartin Glen, which boasts 8000 years of history. Burial cairns and standing stones are all within walking distance of the castle, as is Kilmartin Museum, which has re-opened following a £6m renovation in 2022.
The castle was built in 1550, when Mary Queen of Scots was on the throne, for the Rector of Kilmartin, John Carswell, who later became Bishop of the Isles. The castle was then held by the Campbell Clan for 200 years before being abadondoned for 200 more. Luckily, the castle seemed to fly under the radar during the Victorian period when a number of these buildings has their windows made bigger and extensions added. We're grateful this little castle was overlooked allowing it to remain as original as the day it was built. Now, Kilmartin Castle is a luxury guesthouse available for exclusive use with or without private chef. Kilmartin Castle is the perfect retreat for couples, families and friends. The castle is the perfect place for elopments and vow renewals of up to 20 people.
There is so much to do in and around Kilmartin including stunning walks, mountain bike trails, paddle boarding, fishing and there are some fantastic restaurants. Crinan Canal, also known as Britain's most beautiful shortcut, is a short bike ride from Kilmartin Castle. Oban is 29 miles North and Inverary only 37 miles. Guests usually say 'We wish we had stayed longer.' Please ask for more information on our experience guides who can provide you with unique stories from your trip to share.
Kilmartin Village is also conveniently located for cyclist on the Nation Cycle Route 78 from Campbeltown to Inverness.
Best prices are guaranteed when booking direct.
