Bùth Bharraigh was established in October 2013 to provide opportunities for local people and increase products and facilities available for both locals and visitors to the island.
There are over 80 local suppliers of the Bùth; knitters, photographers, crofters, bakers, artists, and crafters. If you are looking for something special, unique, made on the island then this is the place to come.
As well as being the route to market for local producers the shop also stocks wholefoods, gluten free, vegetarian and vegan products. It stocks yarn, knitting needles, crochet hooks, haberdashery, fishing supplies, surfing accessories, eco products and other items. There is also a wide selection of books in Gaelic and English, for children, teens and adults.
The Visitor Information Service provides an accommodation booking service as well as information about events, places to eat, attractions, opening times, transport, weather, tides and much more. It also has a wide range of leaflets and other tourism literature for purchase or for free. We sell a wide range of maps and local publications if you require more in-depth information. There is always a friendly face if you would like a chat or to ask questions.
The Bùth is also the home of the award-winning Barra Bunting, our unique island guestbook. This started in 2012 and there are now around 300 flags. The flags are strung together and used to decorate community events and spaces. If you would like to drop off your flag or collect some information, then please ask in the shop.
Bùth Bharraigh is a not-for-profit community organisation run by paid staff and experienced volunteers. Due to the unique way in which it operates it has been recognised by winning Scottish Rural Parliament Rural Innovators Award for Business 2015/16 and UK Rural Business Awards Social Enterprise 2016. It is a Living Wage Employer.
