There’s something ‘fishy’ going on in the coastal village of Port Logan on the beautiful Galloway Coast in South West Scotland.
At the end of the spectacular sandy beach in Port Logan there is a pretty whitewashed cottage with a quaint turret. A secret awaits you inside this cottage which is perched on the rocks by the sea. This is home to Port Logan Fishpond which is a unique Scottish Visitor Attraction.
The Fishpond is created from a natural feature of the rocky coastline and was originally used as a sea fish larder for the Laird of Logan. It is the oldest and most unique natural marine 'aquarium' in the UK.
Port Logan Fishpond is now home to a wide range of sea fish and marine life including rays, cod, pollock, turbot, mullet, starfish, hermit crabs and more!
Visit this unusual Visitor Attraction to learn more about the history of the Fishpond and to meet the inhabitants.
Included in your admission to the pond is a visit to the ladies bathing hut which was built sometime before 1845. The ladies from Logan House would change into their swimwear in the stone hut with its cosy fireplace. Once changed they would step down the steps, which are cut into the rock face, to bathe in the tidal pool below. The pool slopes downwards towards the sea giving it a shallow end and a deeper end. The original floor of the hut was made from slabs of local slate and access to the hut was by a narrow bridge made from the same slate. The bridge still gives access to the hut but the slate is no longer visible. The pool and the hut are no longer in use for bathing and it is said that a local bylaw states that when the ladies are bathing no men are allowed in the immediate area.
The Fishpond also has a gift shop selling locally produced arts and crafts, gifts, souvenirs and postcards, fishing tackle and bait (fresh bait on a Thursday).
Parking at the fishpond is free and dogs on a lead are welcome too!
Opening times
Please note there may be days when opening is not possible due to weather conditions and we will post these in advance on Facebook.
We will open each Friday, Saturday and Sunday 10am to 3pm throughout January and February. In addition to the weekend opening we will open daily for the half term holidays - Monday 17th to Friday 21st February 2025 from 10am to 3pm.
Saturday 1st March 2025 is the start of our summer season and we will open daily from 10am to 5pm.
There may be some days when the weather conditions are too bad to open or we have to close early and we will post this on our Facebook page. If in doubt check Facebook or contact us to check before you travel.
Entry tickets for Port Logan Fishpond can be purchased in the gift shop which is a short walk from the car park (parking is free).
