Sat 30th - Sun 7th Sept 2025 We will be bringing you all your festival favourites such as a full Viking/Scots village, the opening parade, opening ceremony, entertainment, music, fringe events, food and craft market, air displays, axe throwing, Glima Wrestling and ever popular Festival of Fire, with fire procession, Viking skirmish, burning of the long boat, entertainment, and ending in a spectacular fireworks display. Scotland and Norway have had somewhat of a rocky history. The Vikings had dominance over Scotland's Islands for many many years and the Scots were beginning to fight back and under King Alexander III, they began to regain control over and win back some of their Islands. This angered King Haakon IV of Norway, who mustered a fleet of 160 longships and an estimated 15,000 - 20,000 Viking warriors to regain their lost territories. A mighty battle took place and the Vikings were defeated. The last battle which ended 500 years of Norse superiority in Scotland was fought here in Largs in 1263.
The Largs Viking festival was created in 1980 to commemorate and embrace the historical and cultural links between these two great nations and to celebrate our intertwined heritage.
The festival is one of the biggest and longest in Scotland. It has grown over its 40 years bringing thousands of visitors from all over the world to experience the Vikings like never before.
However, its not all about the Vikings (although they do have a great presence in the festival), there are craft and farmers markets, entertainers, music events, a fun fair, spectacular air displays, parades, rowing events, a 40' metal Viking statue, pencil monument and fun activities for all the family. Events change from year to year to keep it fresh and interesting for everyone, however the Viking Village is a staple of the festival and has been "invaded" by many different reenactment societies over the years, and is currently under the dominion of The Swords of Dalriada.
All of this takes place at the end of August/beginning of Sept, located in the seaside town of Largs on the West coast of Scotland, which boasts beautiful views over the Clyde estuary to Cumbrae and Arran. Still to this day, you can look out over the water and imagine the mighty fleet of Longships that sliced their way through the waves towards us.
