3 Day Skye High

The Skye High is a wee gem. Ideal for travellers short on time who want to get the most out of their trip to Scotland. All the best stuff is packed in: lochs, ruined castles, a mysterious island and Nessie hunting.

DAY 1: EDINBURGH TO PORTREE ON THE ISLE OF SKYE

Leaving Edinburgh at 8.00am, we take in views of the spectacular Forth Bridges and journey north to Macbeth County. We visit the quaint village of Dunkeld with its historic cathedral sitting on the banks of the River Tay. We drive further into the Highlands and enter the Great Glen. We stop at Fort Augustus on the banks of Loch Ness with the opportunity to search for a glimpse of the legendary beast. Our journey to the Isle of Skye takes us past one of the most photographed castles in Scotland – Eilean Donan. Our home for the night is the small village of Portree on the Isle of Skye.  (Overnight: Portree)

DAY 2: ISLE OF SKYE

Today we travel to the Isle of Skye, also known as the ‘Misty Isle’’ and at the top of the bucket list due to its heart-stopping scenery. This wee island is packed with ruined castles, breath-taking views and faerie stories. Home to the legendary MacLeod and MacDonald Clans, your Guide will recount Celtic myths and Viking legends from the past millennia.

We explore the windswept landscape, stunning coastline and dramatic mountain ranges. The afternoon is spent exploring Dunvegan Castle, ancestral home of the Chiefs of Clan MacLeod before returning to Portree.

  • Old Man of Stor
  • Cuillin Mountains
  • Dunvegan Castle

DAY 3: LOCH NESS TO EDINBURGH

Summer itinerary, April to mid-October:

Our first stop of the day is the beautiful Armadale Castle, Gardens and Museum of the Isles before taking the ferry to the west coast fishing village of Mallaig.

Here you have the option to be a wizard for the day and board the Jacobite Steam Train aka “Hogwarts Express” to Fort William, one of the most spectacular railway journeys in the world and a must for all Harry Potter fans.

The train crosses the Glenfinnan Viaduct where a monument to Bonnie Prince Charlie’s campaign now stands. We head south through the dramatic scenery of Glencoe, wild Rannoch Moor then the heart of Rob Roy country before arriving back in Edinburgh approximately 8.30pm.

Winter itinerary, mid-October to April:

Our route south takes us through the stunning rugged landscape of Glencoe, once used as a backdrop in the James Bond - Skyfall movie and the scene of 1692 massacre of the MacDonald Clan. Journey through one of the last remaining wildernesses in Europe when we cross the Rannoch Moor, a vast stretch of land that will show you yet again another side of Scotland.

We head past Stirling, the scene of some of Scotland’s most famous and bloody battles in the Wars of Independence. Hear of local legends such as William Wallace and Robert the Bruce before the Highlands change back to the Lowlands. After an epic three days, we return to Edinburgh at approximately 5.30pm.
