Scotland’s West Coast Road Trip

This perfectly paced self-drive holiday explores the best of the Scottish west coast, including some of our most captivating islands, villages, castles and beaches.

Begin your holiday by travelling westwards into the delightful region of Kintyre. This tranquil peninsula is certainly off the beaten path and offers countless rewards, including rugged coves and idyllic fishing villages. Explore Campbeltown, once a whisky hub and now undergoing a revival, and tour one of the town’s distilleries. From Kintyre, you can day trip to the gorgeous Isle of Gigha or the rugged Isle of Arran – both a short ferry ride away.

Journey north to the charming coastal town of Oban, renowned as Scotland’s seafood capital and the ‘Gateway to the Isles’. The bustling port, with its constant stream of ferries to the Outer Hebrides and beyond, is utterly captivating – you could spend hours watching the comings and goings.

Hop on the ferry to the enchanting Isle of Mull, with its rugged landscapes and colourful capital, Tobermory. A further ferry will take you to the ‘Cradle of Christianity’, Iona. These islands are a wilderness awaiting discovery, a haven of peace and relaxation, and some of the finest places to spot wildlife in Europe.

Travel northward from Oban into the majestic Scottish Highlands. Drive through Glencoe, renowned as Scotland’s most dramatic valley, and pass Britain’s highest mountain, Ben Nevis. Stop to explore Eilean Donan, one of our most iconic castles, and you’ll soon reach your destination near the road bridge to the Isle of Skye. The Gulf Stream warms this glorious region, allowing palm trees to grow along the lochsides.

Lochalsh is a great base to visit the Isle of Skye, where stunning natural landscapes and a thriving food and drink scene await. Alternatively, you could venture north into the rugged Applecross Peninsula to traverse one of Europe’s last great wildernesses.
