Prestwick Airport Walking Tour
A 1.5 Hour, 2 miles guided walking tour of a section of the perimeter of Prestwick Airport. Over the 1.5 hours we will tell the fascinating story of the history of Prestwick Airport from the early days of flying in 1913 through to the present.
Our tour starts with teas / coffees and a introduction to the tour at the Pioneer Cafe of the Monkton Community Church. From here we will visit a number of sites where we will take you through the history of the airport from 1913 to the present day. Unfortunately (but understandably) because of security restrictions we are limited to where we can walk but this will not prevent us from relating a wonderful tale of innovation, creativity, dogged determination, success, failure, political posturing and 'never say die' attitudes!
We'll take you through the early pioneering years of the 20s and 30s; the establishment of the training school and Scottish Aviation Ltd; the impact of World War 2; the creation of the transatlantic airport during the 50s and 60s and the introduction of jet age airliners; the increased military activity during the cold war; and finally to the creation of a modern day terminal and its turbulent life from 1964 through to today. Oh, and yes, we do talk about Elvis Presley!
