Hadrian's Wall & The Borders
Follow in the footsteps of the Romans while taking in the bonnie scenery of the Scottish Borders
Travelling south from Edinburgh you will follow Dere Street, an old Roman road which was once the main trade supply route from the ports in the south of England up to modern day Scotland.
First stop on this tour is Jedburgh in the Scottish Borders, a historic burgh dominated by a magnificent 12th century Augustinian Abbey. You will have plenty time to view this magnificent Abbey and grab a coffee.
Heading south we make a stop at the scenic Carter Bar. A perfect photo opportunity with the Cheviot Hills as a back drop, the tall stone pillars and national flags marking the crossing point between Scotland and England.
We get our first glimpse of Hadrian's Wall as we travel along it's south side before stopping at the beautiful Steel Rigg. You have time to follow the wall as it snakes up and along the crags, with the lake of Crag Lough in the distance.
Included in the tour is a visit to the archaeological site of Vindolanda. Exploring this site provides an insight to the lives of those who built and lived at this Roman fort. Years of excavation have uncovered many well preserved items from the era. The visitor centre and onsite café, this attraction caters for all.
Back aboard, we travel north and back through the Scottish Borders to Edinburgh. A quick stop will provided for refreshments and comfort break.
