Discover Outlander
Follow in the footsteps of Claire and Jamie on an Outlander tour combining filming locations used in the series and the real life sites that inspired Diana Gabaldon’s novels.
This three day tour weaves together the events of the three seasons across the Jacobite and World War Two eras alongside fascinating actual historical events and breathtaking locations throughout Scotland.
Day One – Departing from locations across the central belt we begin our journey into the past with a visit to Hopetoun House which plays the triple role of The Duke of Sandringhams estate, Jamie and Claire’s Parisian apartment and The Hawkins Estate. We cross over the firth of Forth overlooking the iconic Forth Rail Bridge to the Kingdom of Fife and visit Aberdour Castle which poses as the monastery where Jamie recovers after his spell in prison and on to the picturesque Dysart Harbour which played the part of the port of Le Havre when Claire and Jamie flee to France. Onward to Balgonie Castle, familiar to fans as Eldridge Manor offers an insight into medieval life as it is run as a working castle and a final stop in the stunning Royal village of Falkland, once home to Mary Queen of Scots and also recognisable as Inverness in the series. An overnight stay is enjoyed in the beautiful neighbouring rural county of Perthshire.
Day Two – Begin your day luxuriating in the luscious formal gardens of Drummond Castle, so elaborate they excel as the stand in for the Palace of Versailles in the second series. Departing through the picture postcard town of Crieff and heading Northwards to the true Scottish Highlands. Enjoy some time wandering the grounds of the Highland Folk Museum where a traditional Highland village has been meticulously recreated for visitors and also as a stand in for the majority of homes and settlements in the Jacobite era filming. Heading cross country driving across Rannoch Moor which provides the setting for the Craig na Dun standing stones to the rugged landscape of Lochaber where we arrive in time to see the wartime era Jacobite Steam train as it passes through Banavie, reminiscent of when Claire and Frank said their goodbyes in season one. Overnighting in the real life version of Fort William in the shadow of Scotland’s highest peak, Ben Nevis.
Day Three – Heading south from Fort William our first stop in Glencoe features prominently in the opening credits and throughout the series and is famous in its own right for its outstanding natural beauty and dark history. Follow the trails of Robert MacKenzie along the banks of Loch Katrine before visiting Jamie’s cousins wine warehouse in Le Havre, in its current guise as Deanston Distillery before wandering the state rooms of the iconic Castle Leoch, known locally as Doune Castle. From here your onward journey can be determined by your final destination with a variety of other locations lying to the West, South and East depending upon your choice of evening’s lodgings in the nearby the cities of Glasgow, Stirling or Edinburgh.
