A Stroll around Shapinsay
A day trip to the island of Shapinsay, where we will enjoy a leisurely walk to see a variety of birds, mammals and flowers.
A new year and a new island to explore!
Our day will begin with the short ferry crossing from Kirkwall. Sailing out of the harbour we will look for seabirds and ducks on the water, and enjoy the views looking back to St Magnus Cathedral. As the ferry approaches Shapinsay, Balfour Castle and the village of Balfour will come into sight.
Once on Shapinsay, we will enjoy a walk ranging in length from 5-6 miles. Our route will take us along quiet island roads, farm tracks and paths. We will include a visit to the RSPB Mill Dam reserve where we can see a variety of waders and wildfowl, in the comfort of a hide.
Shapinsay is an island that we can explore all year round, although the routes will vary depending on the time of year. During the winter months (Oct to April) we will visit Vasa where we can see winter visitors such as Whooper swans, Long-tailed ducks, Goldeneyes and Turnstones. During the spring and summer, we will follow some different paths where we can see a variety of wildflowers, insects and birds. There are Harbour seals around the village of Balfour throughout the year.
