Penicuik Estate is a stunning rural retreat just 10 miles south of Edinburgh, with a collection of grand and iconic houses, cottages and lodges immersed in nature and heritage.
Owned and managed by the Clerk family since 1654, successive generations have taken turns to manage this unique place creating a remarkable legacy of landscape, architecture and pioneering rural enterprise.
Once a hub of the Scottish Enlightenment, today the Penicuik Designed Landscape and its collection of Palladian architecture rank as some of the finest and most original in Scotland.
Penicuik House Preservation Trust was established in 1985 by Sir John Clerk (10th Baronet) in response to the threat of Old Penicuik House being demolished. ‘Its role is to maintain and conserve ‘Old Penicuik House’ and other buildings within the Designed Landscape conveyed or leased to the Trustees. While it is currently working on maintaining Old Penicuik House, it is also raising funds for future projects.
At the heart of the Designed Landscape lies Penicuik House. Eclectic, quirky and full of authentic character, Penicuik House is overflowing with art and furniture collected over centuries of the family’s grand tours. With its 1,000m2 private courtyard spaces, nestled amongst 12 hectares of parkland, this is a destination like no other. Penicuik House can be exclusively yours for weddings, milestone celebrations, corporate gatherings, away days and retreats. With eleven suites and five en-suite double bedrooms, it generously sleeps 32 overnight guests – with further guest accommodation in our beautiful collection of cottages and houses.
Our 50-year vision is to build a regenerative business at Penicuik Estate that connects people to nature, benefits local community, protects cultural heritage and responds to the climate and biodiversity emergency.
