Enter Largs Museum and straight away you are stepping
into history.
The museum is housed in a building dating from the 18th century,
originally two weavers’ cottages. and the parish Sexton's house.
Inside you will find a fascinating range of exhibits and displays
telling the story of Largs and district, from Fairlie in the south
to Skelmorlie to the north.
And what a story, covering five thousand years of history, including:
Largs’s very own Neolithic chambered tomb, with stone-age implements
on display in the museum
Largs both as a centre for weaving, an important cottage industry
for many years, and a thriving fishing village
The town’s Australian connection through the remarkable story
of Major General Sir Thomas MakDougall Brisbane
The world famous yacht and boat building yard of the Fife dynasty in Fairlie
The vital, and secret, role of both Largs and Fairlie during world war two
The story of not just one, but two 14th/15th century castles in Skelmorlie
Largs as a seaside holiday resort and destination for a paddle steamer trip
“doon the watter”
And much, much more.
You’ll probably be happy to take your time and wander round on your own, but our welcoming volunteer guides from the Largs & District Museum & Historical Society will be on hand to answer any questions.
They will also take you into the adjoining old parish kirkyard for an explanatory tour of the Skelmorlie Aisle ancient monument, with its amazing 17th century painted ceiling
