The Friends of Glasgow Royal Infirmary Museum commemorates the history of the oldest hospital in Glasgow. It is the only museum in a working hospital in Scotland. Entry is free.

We aim to create a centre where people from Glasgow and other visitors, including school children, can learn and understand the contribution that the Glasgow Royal Infirmary (GRI) has made to our city and the rest of the world. Glasgow Royal Infirmary has a rich history as a centre for scientific and medical innovation as well as being a symbol of the best of the city of Glasgow for over 200 years. Highlights of its history include:

· Joseph Lister who discovered antisepsis while working in GRI in 1860-1869

· John McIntyre launched the world’s very first x-ray department in GRI in 1902

· Rebecca Strong, our first matron, trained under Florence Nightingale and revolutionised the profession of nursing- her block training scheme has been adopted world wide.

· Sir William MacEwan performed the world’s first successful brain surgery to remove a tumour in GRI 1879

· Ellen Brown Orr – the first female surgeon in Scotland 1911 trained at GRI.
