Add to that Melrose’s celebrated boutiques, pubs and restaurants (the acclaimed farm-to-fork restaurant Provender is literally next door), and you’ll find yourself sinking gratefully into those tweed sofas at the end of long, contented days’ exploring.
For longer walks, the 100km-long St Cuthbert’s Way starts here in Melrose, where the Saint started his religious life in 650AD, and takes hikers all the way to the Holy Island of Lindisfarne, where his life ended. Keen walkers might also be tempted to hike all, or just some sections, of the 107km-long Borders Abbey circular walk, which links the historic abbeys of Melrose, Dryburgh, Jedburgh and Kelso.
