Brewhouse Flat - Culzean Castle
This spacious and comfortably furnished flat is situated on the seaward corner of the west wing of the castle and has uninterrupted sea views across to Arran.
The Brewhouse Flat is situated in and around romantic Culzean Castle, designed by Robert Adam in the 1770s one one of Scotland's most spectacular clifftop sites. This setting gives the castle magnificent views across the Firth of Clyde to the island of Arran. The 565 acres of country park surrounding the castle offer a stimulating variety of countryside to explore, including clifftop and woodland walks, a delightful Swan Pond, and many fascinating small buildings contemporary with teh castle, such as the Gas House and the Ice House. Children especially, will enjoy the adventure playground, the Deer Park and the rock pools on the shore.
The Brewhouse Flat was part of the circular brewery which Robert Adam added on to the west end of the castle in the 1780s when he extended and converted the old 1590s castle into an Italian 'castle-style' seaside villa for the bachelor Lord David Kennedy, 10th Earl of Cassillis. Beer, the staple drink for all the workers on the estate, was brewed here until Victorian times, when the 3rd Marquess of Ailsa added more family accommodation around the Old Brewhouse and turned the basement area into a huge wine cellar!
Private garden area for guests with garden furniture provided, and access to the country park. Children will require supervision when playing outside the flat, as although the undergrowth is dense in this area there is no fence or barrier between the lawn and the steep slope down to the beach.
