A Mhoine - a stones throw from Tongue

AMhoine

Dunnet to Tongue

We explore the eastern end of the North Highland Way and then on to AMhoine. This is a fantastic route, if somewhat tricky for walkers, cyclists and horse riders at the moment. We are working hard to improve it.

The route from Dunnet to Tongue passes through some of the most spectacular scenery in the world. Thurso is a beautiful little town, and we have now found a way around Dounreay so that people do not have to walk on the road. This will be published in our magazine Environmental News in December 2024. Around Reay is stunning, and the narrow road passing through the village is delightful. At Crosskirk there is a very popular distillery, as well as St. Marys Chapel.

There are difficulties with parking at Coldbackie, so take care. There is a core path there and it is easy to get out and walk, but parking is limited.

Bettyhill and Portskerra are delightful, especially the campsite.

We continue through Borgie and the wonderful forest, and then on to Tongue, where you can delve across the wild mountains, or follow the route over the Kyle bridge.

Information sur le prestataire

Friends of the North Highland Way

Enjoy a great day out exploring the north coast of Scotland on foot, mountain bike or on horseback. We can provide a passport to check into the churches along the route and help with great wildlife watching spots. There are in fact two routes, one along the coast and the other over A'Mhoine.

Horaires d'ouverture

This is self guided, so no opening times, but you will need to check the opening times of the various churches as they change constantly.
