Private Tour to St Andrews and Fife
Privately guided tour from Edinburgh to St Andrews, with private walking tour of the Cathedral, Castle and University, then free time to see the Home of Golf ..
Discover the Kingdom of Fife and town of town of St Andrew’s on this privately guided tour from Edinburgh. We depart in the morning and head for the Firth of Forth with a short photo stop of views of the famous 19th century rail bridge. We continue north and pass by Loch Leven with its island castle ruins. This is where Mary Queen of Scots was imprisoned for 1 year. We then travel through the Howe of Fife, one of the vastest agricultural farming regions in Scotland.
In St Andrews we will have almost half a day to explore the town. Your private guide will give you a personal walking tour of the Cathedral, Castle and University. St Andrew’s was once the religious centre of Scotland, its Cathedral was once as big as Santiago de Compostela, now left in ruins. As an option we can go to the Cathedral Museum and/or up St. Rules Tower for a panoramic view.
After a short walk along the coast we reach St Andrew's castle. This was home of the Bishops and was a key part of the religious conflicts in the 16th century. Underneath you can go in the tunnel mines used to attack and counter attack.
St Andrew’s University is the oldest in Scotland, dating to 1410-3. It has kept its unique traditions such as raison day and the May dip. We will take a walk around its historic quadrangle and if open visit St Salvator’s Chapel.
Then you will have some free time to roam the town and find lunch. St Andrew’s is of course also known as the home of golf. You can take this opportunity to visit one of the many golf shops, walk part of the Old Course and visit the British Golf Museum.
To end the day we take a drive along the famous Fife Coastal Route, an historic area of fishing for many years. We stop in Anstruthers then head back to Edinburgh, returning about 5 or 6pm.
