Inveraray Castle, Argyll

Castles, Kirk and Lochs

Explore Scotlands west coast from Glasgow to Inveraray, you will see amazing castles and a legends final resting place. You will see magnificent lochs too. You will get the chance to visit a very famous castle that was in the outlander series.

We head north from Glasgow towards our first destination, Doune Castle.

We will head up past Stirling castle, one of Scotlands most famous castles, with it’s gold painted Great Hall being painted to replicate what the castle would of looked like back in the 1500s, King James IV had it painted in a colour known as Kings Gold. It is a truly remarkable castle with plenty of history.

Doune Castle is a 14th century castle and was built for Robert Stewart, the Duke of Albany. He acted as regent to 3 Scottish kings. This castle is a very famous castle starring in the TV series, Outlander as Leoch Castle. It also featured as Winterfell in Game of Thrones. As for feature films it was the setting in Monty Python and the holy grail, this film is fantastic.

Last but not least my favourite film to feature Doune castle was the Outlaw King in which it was the Douglas castle, owned by the the good Sir James or the black Douglas as the English called him.

We will then head through Callander across the Highland boundry into rolling hills and forests to Loch Lubnaig for a little refreshments stop.

Next we are going up to another Scottish legends, burial place, Rob Roy McGregor a very famous cattle rustler, outlaw and Jacobite. He got a loan of £1000 from the Duke of Montrose but he sent his head drover to get the money who then stole it and disappeared leaving McGregor in debt and an outlaw. We will stop for a short break here and you can see the grave and imagine what his life may have been like.

We will then head over to one of the most visited and famous castles in Scotland, positioned on the banks of Loch Awe, the longest fresh water loch in Scotland at a distance of 25mi (41km). Kilchurn castle was once belonged to the fearsome Campbells but is now under Historic Environment Scotland ownership.

Once we leave Kilchurn Castle we will head to the town of Inveraray, home of the chief of the clan Campbell who to this day lives in the Inveraray Castle with his family, you can choose to visit the castle or you can visit the 19th century jail which opened in 1820. There are also malt whisky shops that you can visit if you fancy a wee cheeky bottle of the 'good stuff'.

Once we are back on the road we will be heading East to the ‘Rest and be thankful’ road through the rugged mountains and the Arrochar alps which is an absolutely stunning part of Scotland; it will take your breath away! It has mountains, beautiful lochs and waterfalls. We will stop at the ‘Rest and be thankful’ view point. What a view it is, it really is spectacular!

After our stop at the ‘Rest and be thankful’ we will travel south down by the ‘Bonnie Bonnie banks of Loch Lomond’. We are heading to a little village called Luss which sits right on the Banks of Loch Lomond, Here you will have time to soak in the stunning views across the Largest Loch in Scotland before heading back to Glasgow.
