Rothesay Castle

North East 250

Rothesay Castle holds a unique position in Scotland- not only for its age (it dates back to the early 13th century) but for its distinctive circular design and curtain wall, enjoyed by a walk round the castle's moat. Built to protect the Stewart family from invasion from Norway, the castle was twice besieged, in 1230 and 1263, leading to the building of four projecting towers.  Discover the fascinating history of the castle in displays in the gatehouse of the great hall - restored by the Marquess of Bute in 1900.
