Heron, River Tweed

Melrose

Tweed Explorer

Join a guided riverside stroll with an experienced wildlife guide on the lookout for otters and the bird life of the River Tweed.

This two and a half hour guided walk starts at Greenyards in Melrose, from where you'll head off to the river to try to catch a glimpse of otters and the rest of the wildlife of the river.

Otters are elusive and there's never a guarantee of seeing them, but during the walk we’ll be visiting some of the places where we know they are regularly spotted and using our local knowledge to improve your chances.

But the Tweed isn't just about otters - there's so much more to see.

We'll be looking for the bird life of the river, including dippers, kingfisher, oystercatchers, heron, buzzards and common sandpiper. There’s always the chance of roe deer and a host of other creatures. Later in the year we'll be keeping an eye out for ospreys following the course of the river.

Your knowledgable guide knows the river well and will head for the places where there have been recent sightings.

This lovely riverside walk takes us through beautiful scenery on flat ground.

We run our nature walks to give more people a chance to enjoy the wildlife of southern Scotland and to help cover the cost of our community nature and wildlife projects. All profits go back into the community interest company to enable us to continue to operate our Mauldsheugh Wood community wildlife project, along with nature clubs, school visits and collaborations with other community groups.
