South Mainland tour
This is a full-day tour (which can be shortened to a half-day if necessary). The tour will begin in Lerwick with a little potted history of the town before heading down through Shetland’s South Mainland. Characterised by wide sandy bays, this peninsu
On the tour we will visit:
- St Ninian’s Isle beach; a 50-metre long sand tombolo which is breathtakingly beautiful. There will also be the option of a walk to the 12th century Chapel Site where a hoard of 9th century treasure was discovered in the 1950s.
- Crofthouse Museum, a traditional thatched house with a peat fire which is styled as it would have been in the 1870s.
- Jarlshof Prehistoric & Norse Settlement, Europe’s largest multi-period site. This tour will walk visitors through 5,000 years of human history in Shetland with the chance to explore the prehistoric ruins and discover how Shetland’s past people lived, worked and ate.
- Sumburgh Head. During the breeding season, this is one of the best places to see puffins in Shetland, as well as many more of our breeding seabirds.
