Historic market town & Royal Burgh of Dumfries with great walks along the River Nith.
On our journey south & then back north again through the Southern Uplands we have many stunning route options, which can also include part of the Borders east and the Galloway forest part west.
Southbound we offer a various optional routes & stops
- Walk/photostop at the Falls of Clyde national nature reserve & New Lanark mills.
- Through the Southern Uplands to Wanlockhead – Scotland’s highest village & Leadhills
- Stopping at beautiful Moffat and heading on a stunning route to the Grey Mare’s Tail national nature reserve (this route can also be combined/varied with our Borders 1D#5 route – as the Dumfriesshire/Borders boundary area is some of the wildest, most remote area full of bens, lochs & glens with a lot fewer tourists around as you find up north.
Historic market town & Royal Burgh of Dumfries with great walks along the River Nith.
- optional side trip south to Caerlaverock castle, with its wide moat, twin-towered gatehouse and lofty battlements it is the epitome of the medieval stronghold.
Heading past Sweetheart Abbey towards the coast towards the coast and Sandyhills & Rockcliffe (with an option of a coastal walk to Castlehill viewpoint),
from there west optional combination with our Galloway tour # 1D#16 to include the Isle of Whithorn, from where along the scenic route to Wigtonwn (famous for its bookshops) and Newton Stewart we are heading inland into the wild and dramatic hills of the Galloway Forest park before we reach New Galloway and the scenery up north is stunning.
