Creative Immersive Workshop
Friday 13 and Saturday 14 August 2021
A two-day immersive creative workshop at the Orains Studio on the West Coast of Scotland.
For a maximum of four people.
The Magic of Making
The creation of handmade objects and artefacts is a liberating experience. Stepping away from “the fast” and allowing for time to be part of the ideas and design process offers the opportunity to make something truly personal - think of a collage, a natural dye, sculpture or textile art.
During this two-day exclusive workshop you will create art in the company of multi-disciplinary and conceptual artist Pieter van der Werf at the Orains Studio in Colintraive.
Perched on the side of a hill, the studio is situated in two acres of private woodland gardens in a beautiful part of Scotland. Here, almost hidden from the world, Loch Riddon nestles between two mountain ridges and forms part of the small National Scenic Area ‘Kyles of Bute’. It is part of the UK’s Temperate or Atlantic Rainforest zone, and inhabits rare species, and ancient natural trees and shrubs like oak, birch, pine, hazel and ash. The Orains Studio carries ecology and sustainability at heart.
Your two days
Choose from one or a combination of the following art forms and enjoy two days of focused making without distraction: textile creation including wet felting; two dimensional and three dimensional collage making; landscape and close-up nature photography; creating natural dyes and pigments with local botanicals (flora is diverse and abundant); dyeing of natural fibers & painting with natural dye pigments.
Working with art and craft in a slower and focused way allows for an intense engagement of the mind and materials. Pieter is happy to advise on the art form before you book to ensure the right fit.
About the Orains Design Partnership
Pieter set up the Orains Design Partnership with his partner Fiona. Together they run the studio based on the principles of ecology and sustainability: local firewood is used for heat, private hill water is used for felting textiles and - perhaps because of Pieter’s Dutch roots - the bicycle is used most days. You can read more about the studio’s philosophy on sustainable making in Craft Scotland’s Make It Green blog here https://www.craftscotland.org/journal/article/pieter-van-der-werf
Pieter’s art spans three decades and includes exhibiting at Sculpture by the Sea, Sydney, with the installation “A Beachcomber’s House”, then - in 2006 - already highlighting the issue of plastics in the oceans.
The studio’s work encompasses the making of large textile wall art and researching and creating natural dyes and pigments. Orains is listed in the directories of Craft Scotland and the Crafts Council UK and supports The Campaign for Wool.
Lunches and refreshments
On both workshop days lunch will be provided using locally sourced ingredients and products. We are very fortunate to be surrounded by artisan food producers and are in the middle of a wonderful natural larder.
