Stirling Eurowalk
Free self-guided online walking tour of Stirling. Discover some of the historic European links in this former capital of Scotland. Our walk will take place in the old town area around Stirling Castle.
This 2.3 km circular walk takes place in a historic area of Stirling around the castle. The walk starts at Stirling Castle, one of the most important castles in Scotland and which has had multiple links to the European continent throughout its history
- We will discover more about the history of Stirling Castle
- We will find out more about how Stirling, which was a capital of Scotland, is steeped in European history.
- We will look at some of the features of the buildings which show architectural influences from France, Italy and the Netherlands.
- We will discover more about the French and Italian connections of the founder of the Smith Art Gallery which houses some fabulous art and artefacts from all over Europe including an example from an Austrian artist and paintings of Italian figures by the founder of the gallery.
The entire walk is 2.3 km long, It starts at the castle and goes downhill towards the Smith Art Gallery and then returns by a different route. There are cobble stones, uneven ground and steps on the route.
Allow two hours for the walk but it will take longer if you visit any of the buildings.
Walk at your own pace, enjoy the surroundings and stop for refreshments along the route.

EuroWalks in Scotland bring a new insight into local tours by showcasing Scotland’s deep-rooted associations with other European nations. The free self-guided walking tours are devised by members of the European Movement in Scotland (EMiS) with expert knowledge of their localities. Tours are currently available for Dumfries, Dundee, Dunfermline, Edinburgh (3), Glasgow (6), Kirkwall, Perth, St Andrews and Stirling. The online guides are regularly updated. Several longer tours - designed for cyclists and motorists - are also available for Fife and areas of western Scotland.
