Glasgow West End Eurowalk
Free self-guided online walking tour in the West End of Glasgow, highlighting European links.
Visit our website on your mobile device, follow the directions given for the route round the town, tour the main landmarks and learn about their many historic and contemporary associations with other parts of Europe.
The 3 km walking route begins at the Grosvenor Hotel at the junction of Byres Road and Great Western Road in the West End of Glasgow. It finishes just across the road from there at the Glasgow Botanic Gardens.
The walk includes:
- some history of Glasgow observatories and a famed and respected German Astronomy Professor
- a story of two families and a Scottish born German hero
- the Glasgow Botanic Gardens and some Italian sculpture to be seen in the glasshouses
- some Italian and French influences on the architecture of some of the buildings that we will look at
- the flagship hotel that was owned by a famous Cypriot born hotelier and benefactor of the Greek Orthodox church which we will see on the route
- a famous Glasgow shipping magnate and art collector's house and why he and his brother became the Consuls for Austria and Hungary
The entire walk is approximately 3 km long, with some sections uphill and downhill but walking mostly on pavements.
Walk at your own pace, enjoy the surroundings. Refreshments are available on Byres Road and Great Western Road, in the Botanic Gardens or at the Grosvenor Hotel.

EuroWalks in Scotland bring a new insight into local tours by showcasing Scotland’s deep-rooted associations with other European nations. The free self-guided walking tours are devised by members of the European Movement in Scotland (EMiS) with expert knowledge of their localities. Tours are currently available for Dumfries, Dundee, Dunfermline, Edinburgh (3), Glasgow (6), Kirkwall, Perth, St Andrews and Stirling. The online guides are regularly updated. Several longer tours - designed for cyclists and motorists - are also available for Fife and areas of western Scotland.
