Big Trees & Whisky Perthshire
Perthshire is known as land of the big trees and driving north past Pitlochry you will immediately see why. If you love whisky this county offers some marvellous opportunities to sample some of this equisite liquid and visit the whisky distilleries.
Glenturret is the whisky distillery who opened the first ever visitor centre under James Fairlie in 1980. Glenturret is also one of Scotland’s oldest distilleries being officially (legally) founded in 1775 but records provide evidence of whisky making (illegally) as far back a 1717.
Glenturret Whisky Distillery has recently refurbished their visitor centre and offer a variety of tours as well as bar lunches.
The little town of Crieff is picturesque, tells the drover’s story and nearby hosts the UK’s oldest lending library, Innerpeffray Library.
Meandering further on our whisky journey your next destination could be Dewar’s Distillery, who sell Aberfeldy’s single malt as well as blended whiskies. They offer a variety of tours and also a “Become a blender” experiences which is not that common since most people nowadays favour the single malts but it is a very different way to experience a distillery.
In Aberfeldy you can hire e-bikes, go kayaking (Beyond Adventure), visit the Watermill book shop & cafe or go for a meal to the Thyme Bistro at Erichel (very nice with children as they have numerous farm animals around).
Further on in our whisky quest Pitlochry is the next destination with two whisky distilleries and if you have not consumed enough alcohol yet Moulin’s Beer Brewery.
Blair Athol Whisky Distillery is owned by Diageo and offers a variety of interesting tours, all of Diageo’s range of whiskies and the Blended whisky Bell’s.
Edradour Whisky Distillery is sadly currently not open to the public. It is still worth a wee drive up there and stop to sample some Edradour or Ballechin.
This would make a nice day tour from Edinburgh (but can pretty much start anywhere in Scotland):
