The Jacobite Highlander
Enjoy a wonderful scenic tour through the Scottish Highlands and a memorable trip on the Jacobite Steam Train along the fabulous West Highland Railway Line.
Day One
Edinburgh – Culloden Moor - Loch Ness
We travel from Edinburgh across the Forth Road Bridge and the Kingdom of Fife to the ‘Fair City of Perth'. We make our first stop of the day in the heart of Highland Perthshire to visit The Hermitage for a pretty woodland walk to view a romantic waterfall.
There are wonderful mountain vistas to enjoy as our coach makes the climb through the Pass of Drumochter. The stunning Cairngorms range of peaks includes Ben Macdui, Britain's second highest mountain. This area is part of Britain's largest National Park and home to a wide range of rare wildlife.
Bonnie Prince Charlie and his Jacobite army were finally defeated at Culloden Moor in 1746, the last battle ever fought on British soil. We see the battle site before making our way through Inverness to reach the banks of mysterious Loch Ness. Our drive takes in the full length of the loch, so keep a careful watch, just in case!
Overnight: Fort Augustus
Day Two
Loch Ness - Jacobite Steam Train - Edinburgh
After breakfast we tour through the Great Glen. Impressive Ben Nevis, Britain's tallest mountain, guides us towards Fort William which sits on the banks of Loch Linnhe.
The whistle blows and it's all aboard for an unforgettable journey on the famous Jacobite Steam Train. Mountains, lochs and wild moorland pass by your window all the way to Mallaig as we travel on our steam-hauled train. Cameras at the ready for a souvenir photo as we cross the Glenfinnan Viaduct, just like the Hogwarts Express!
As Mallaig is a popular fishing port, it's just the place for an extra-fresh seafood lunch before returning to Fort William.
A drive along the banks of Loch Leven brings us into the eerie beauty of Glen Coe, the Glen of Weeping. It was here that Campbell soldiers cold-bloodedly slaughtered members of the MacDonald clan, who had been their hosts. Although this happened in 1692, it remains controversial to this day.
The wild beauty of Rannoch Moor provides a ruggedly different vista before we descend the Black Mount with its spectacular views over Loch Tulla.
We soon return to the Lowlands and make our way towards Stirling, with its grand castle standing guard over the city. We then join the motorway for the short journey back to Edinburgh.
