St Andrews EuroWalk
Free self-guided online walking tour of the historic university town and the home of golf
Visit our website on your mobile device, follow the directions given for the route round the town, tour the main landmarks and learn about their many historic and contemporary associations with other parts of Europe.
The circular walk begins and ends at St Salvator's university chapel in the centre of the town and includes:
- the main quadrangle of the university with its foundation documents coming from Spain
- the castle captured by a French fleet with an Italian commander
- the cathedral and harbour with a legendary Greek connection
- the house reputedly used by Mary Queen of Scots, who embodied Scotland’s auld alliance with France
- the place of burning of a Czech Hussite martyr
- a mosaic gifted to the town by grateful Polish soldiers
- a bust of a Polish general in a park with Ukrainian connections
- the 18th green of the Old Course, the scene of a famous victory of a popular Spanish golfer, the name of the sport perhaps originating in The Netherlands
- and ending back at the university chapel with a renowned Austrian-made organ
The entire walk is approximately 2.5 miles or 4 kilometres long, mostly over level ground apart from an inclined footpath down towards the harbour and, later along the walk, a short flight of steps which can be avoided by taking a more circuitous route.
Walk at your own pace, enjoy the surroundings and stop for refreshments along the route.
[Please note that this self-guided tour, entirely along public footpaths, is undertaken at your own risk.]
