RSPB Scotland Loch Druidibeg nature reserve

Uncover stunning scenery and wonderful wildlife at Loch Druidibeg, a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) on South Uist.

Welcome to RSPB Scotland Loch Druidibeg, a community nature reserve formed in partnership with local crofters and the community estate. It is a Special Protection Area and Site of Special Scientific Interest. The reserve is made up of a freshwater loch surrounded by moorland, peat bogs and pockets of woodland, and is a haven for wildlife throughout the year.

In spring and summer, look out for white-tailed and golden eagles soaring above, listen out for the eerie cry of red-throated divers on the loch and the call of the cuckoo in the distance.  Keep your eyes peeled for merlins, hen harriers and short-eared owls as well as returning migrants such as chiff-chaff that can be seen as you wander through the woodland. The peat bogs are home to a fascinating array of plants, including the insect-eating carnivorous sundews and butterworts.

In autumn and winter, families of whooper swans arrive from their Northern breeding grounds to spend winter on the loch alongside their grey cygnets. Ravens can be seen dancing and turning in the sky as they reaffirm their pair bonds and the dramatic sunrises and sunsets are a must-see during those shorter winter days.   

There are three self-led nature trails: The Woodland Trail, The Lowland Moor Trail and The Upland Moor Trail.  Information boards are positioned in the car park and along the trails to reveal more about the mix of habitats and the species they support.

The reserve and car park are always open. Admission is free but donations to help us continue our work are welcome.

Information for dog owners:

RSPB Scotland welcomes responsible access in line with the Scottish Outdoor Access Code. This nature reserve is important for wildlife and ground-nesting birds breed here (from 1 April to 15 August). Livestock is also present on the reserve all year round and we would ask that you keep your dog under close control, preferably on a short lead, at all times and please clean up after our dog.
